A Sweater for Maile

This past weekend, a light storm rolled through Honolulu, and it rained all weekend. Combined with the cooler-than-normal air and wind, and our little dog Maile was shivering, even with the doors closed and the windows shut.

For context, it’s been in the mid to high sixties here, thus confirming that cold wussies in Hawaii also have cold wussy dogs, lol.

Anyway, I went pattern hunting and found the Edinburgh Seamless Dog Sweater.

Since Maile is the smaller of our two dogs and was the one who seemed the coldest, I started with her. It surprisingly only took me two days!

Sparkly sweater!

Maile is kind of a nut. She goes airborne on a daily basis when excited (clearly our dog has great cardio) and tends to destroy things all the time. Knowing that, I was pretty nervous she’d just rip it off herself and then unmake it, so I used a skein of acrylic yarn that someone gave me a while back as a sort-of experiment.

White stripes added for variation.

Partway through, I remembered that I had a couple of skeins of worsted yarn from Hobbii that I didn’t know what to do with, so I chose the white one and used it to add two stripes. I ended up making it shorter than the pattern called for because when I held it up to her, it was already getting a bit too long. It’s easily adaptable.

A great fit!

Aww, look at my little alpha doggie girl! Surprisingly, though she was a little “wtf is this thing on me?!” at first, she settled in and seemed to understand that it was keeping her toasty warm.

Cameras confound her.

I know I said I took measurements, but I was actually kinda shocked that it fit, and so perfectly.

Finished stats:

Needles used:

  • US 6 4mm DPNs
  • US 8 5mm circular

Yarn used:

  • Plymouth Holiday Lights in Blue (72 grams used)
  • Hobbii Starlight Soft in White (21 grams used)

Cost:

$1.57, for the partial use of the Starlight Soft, since the Holiday Lights was given to me.

I’ve started one for our bigger dog Mimi, though I don’t think she has nearly as much trouble staying warm during the rainy season since she’s bigger and has a thicker coat. Still, I can’t make one for one dog and then not the other! Plus my family has already started giving me crap about dog favoritism…

Hers makes me more nervous, though, since Mimi is bigger than the biggest dog size on the pattern’s chart, which means I’ll have to wing it and try to adjust it for her size on my own.

Wish me luck!
